Translator's Note: this is the full beta-read translations of the interview pieces I did back in 2019. Some of the translated parts (on twt, some are deleted and moved here) are re-translated to a more accurate translations. Also if anyone notices the scan source on my translation for this piece is changed. The original source I used back in 2019 deleted their account and I can't link it to this post, so I use anther one (and they have better quality scan as well). It's still the same interview regardless!

You're filming till late at night, isn't it hard for you? You even still joke around with Chaeyeon and Hitomi

Since we can't lose our energy (at time of filming), when the members are together we don't fight and instead we work hard to able to enjoy our schedule. When the younger members felt tired the older members will tell them "We can do it!", give them more support, or joke around to stay energized.

But you must have received help from the members as well.

We work together to overcome that (tiredness). Yena and Yujin are particularly the group's mood maker. Even thought they lose their energy easily but they regain their strength just as easy.

You must have been thankful (of the members) as a leader. Is there any member you're cautious of in the first meeting?

Hitomi & Nako. They're members who keep things to themselves so I'm worried if they're uncomfortable with something they won't say it out loud. They tend to just accept what they're told to do. So I eventually  make a specific time for us to "say everything that bothers (you)", but even so they hardly even do that. However, at the end they finally expressed them one by one and cried (their hearts out), seeing that really made me feel sorry that I didn't know better and it hurts my heart.

You must  be worried about the foreign members.

Hitomi and Nako are the quiet members. So when I saw them cried I could only think of "it must have been really hard for them to not be able to express themselves". For the korean members they're naturally the type to express themselves. The good thing is Sakura becomes the interpreter for Hitomi and Nako. She told them to don't hesitate to tell me if they have a concern. I'm always thankful and sorry for the japanese members. Although they're still haven't talked much, but it's getting better. So maybe out of five concers they had, each of them expresses one concern, so it makes two concerns? (laughs). They don't sleep late, never been late, and take care of themselves well too. So I hope they tell us more (of their concerns).

You have more experiences in debuting, is there anything you told the younger members?

I told them to do whatever their heart desires. Though I'm still worried about them because they're young and they tend to get sick of things easily. So, I always try to keep the group's atmosphere comfortable. There might be teams who fight a lot, but there also teams who get along with each other. But our kids are really kind so we don't really fight with each other. Rather, if there are some inconveniece (between members) they will try to fix that and not fight about it. That makes me really thanful (of the members).

All of you were put in a team only right after the audition show ended, but (the team) seem to be very solid.

We were all trainees who are from different companies and not all of us are close with each other. However we get along really well and I'm proud of that. For me, I want to spend my time as IZ*ONE and with everyone in the group happily. I told this to the members so many times that we could have became someone who can't perform like this if it isn;'t because we're IZ*ONE. So I hope everyone is happy.

Is there a time when you feel being a team leader is hard?

it's not easy to express my thoughts across to each of the member who has their own tendencies. I'm usually the type who have to explain everything first what I'm going to say and there are members who prefer it that way. But there are also members who like it when I'm being direct. For instance, Yujin is the type who you should explain everything first or she might get hurt by straight forward statements (laughs) At first it's a hard task to grasp, but the longer we spend time together I think I get a hang of it now.

The youngest members (wonyoung and yujin) have a huge age gap with you, is there a moment when you feel the (generation) gap?

The youngest members thought DBSK/TVXQ has only 2 members! In my days DBSK was very famous and the kids didn't know that the group used to have 5 members.

By taking care of the members who are varied in age and personality, you seem to be able to understand not just the members but also yourself.

I think my personality has always been the same. These days I wanted to rebel from how I usually am. (laughs) I was the kid who listen to adults well and still did until some time ago. We have a tight schedule these days and I felt like rebelling a bit. I was surprise by myself that I have that side as well. These days I keep looking back at my self. To keep my mental health I try to live kindly, of course (those thoughts) should not change.

Throughout the filming the members took a lot of selcas, but seems like you're not the type to take a lot of it (selcas).

I think I don't really have skill for taking pictures. I keep having the same expression and I don't really like that. I can do it on stage, but when I'm in a situation when someone told me "I'll take (your) pictures" I don't seem to enjoy that as well. Maybe because I have a lot of awkward poses (laughs). Hyewon is really good at taking selcas. The members usually come and ask for her to take their pictures.

So, you're not the type of person who hardly express herself?

I think it's 50/50. It depends on how I feel. If I have a lot of stress or usually I have a lot of thoughts when I'm alone and I don't like that (feeling) so I will go out with my friends. But since our schedule is so tight, I take a rest instead. I'm usually a bright person but even when meeting people I can show my dark/tired side too. I wasn't actually a homebody before, but I think I slowly become one.

Then it must be nice if you have a hobby to do at home.

I heard handcrafting is a good one. I also like making accessory. I usually went to Dongdaemun market and bought the material then made it myself. It's a hobby I started before Mnet < Produce 48>. I also made it while filming and gave it to other trainees as gift. I also do song writing as hobby, but we're so busy that it's hard to do it these days. I want to find more hobbies that I will stick on to. if I have time I want to try skin scuba diving too. I heard you can do that in Cebu or Guam.

Since you have less time on doing your hobbies, is there something else you're focused on instead?

These days I'm putting more attention to my surroundings. Including IZ*ONE members there are a lot of precious people around me. These days they send so many gifts of macarons and sodas to us. The dessert (I received) are all macarons so I'm avoiding macarons for a now! (laughs)

You seem to really like talking about desserts (laughs). Other than (receiving) macarons, is there something else you want to achieve?

Driving license. Weirdly I kept failing the test. In the group none of us has driving license. But once I get one I'll take the members to highways and drive with them when the street is empty. I want to do that.

So what kind of moments you want to spend with the fans

I want to take a pick (of the moment) from one of IZ*ONE's song. In our song < Up > we have this lyrics "I hope the time stops".
